CHANGES TO COUNCIL TAX FOR ALL EMPTY PROPERTIES

As from April 2013 ALL empty properties will be charged council tax & no exemptions will apply.

This means that if you have a long term empty property the rate will increase to 150% and all current empty properties will be charged at 1005 council tax.

THERE WILL BE NO EXEMPTION PERIOD

This is in an effort to encourage landlords of long term let properties to return them to the market place so they can be let & is also to encourage landlords to return properties quickly back onto the open rental market, thus cutting down void periods.

This ultimately means that if you are a landlord of a rental property you need to advise the council immediately that your property has been re let to avoid being charged for a void period.

It is imperative that if we are renting a property it is now constantly let to avoid these charges.

Conversely, if you are selling a property that is empty of may have been let then you will also be charged & again comminication with the council via your estate or letting agent is key & essential to make sure that any charging period is kept to a minimum.
