Spaceship home for sale:extremely rare Futuro house in New Zealand on the market after being in storage for years A rare Futuro house, currently in storage in Christchurch, has been listed in a sealed-bids sale.
An extremely rare UFO-shaped home has been listed for sale in Christchurch, New Zealand, with a guide price of £155,600.
Designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen in 1968, the Futoro house is one of only 100 ever built.
Around 60 remain today, with one in Warrington on the Otago coast coming to market in 2017 after its owner decided it would be "selfish" to hang on to it for only occasional use.
Thought to have sold within two weeks of being listed for sale, the Futuro — known locally as The Spaceship — can be rented on Airbnb for around £62 a night.
The white spaceship-shaped model now for sale in Ōtautahi, Christchurch, has been relocated twice in the past decade making appearances in the Christchurch Botanical Gardens and The Cathedral Square in the early 2000s.
At eight metres wide, the Futuro is in storage and is being sold as-is.
The current owner inherited it from a step-grandmother who lived in it for 15 years, according to stuff.co.nz, although it's now set-up as a museum piece.
Partial restorations have been undertaken, although it still needs a gel coat so the new owner will be able to select their own shade as part of finishing the outside shell.
The hatch door has cables and a garage opener that lowers and raises the door, the latter hasn't been used for a number of years but the door opens and closes by way of counter-weight attached to the cabling.
Inside, there are Marimekko couches and historical plaques. Included in the sale are couch units, a fibreglass kitchen bench, shelving wall units and the original custom-shaped mattress.
Without restrictions on overseas buyers, the Futuro can be relocated to anywhere in the world for an extra cost — as long as a cradle is installed for it to rest on.
Futuro homes were originally intended to be ski cabins that would be easy to built and heat, with the end result being transportable homes that could be dismantled and reassembled in two days — or even airlifted in one piece if required.
This Futuro house is for sale in a 'deadline sale' which means would-be buyers should submit confidential offers until the fixed date of midday (NZDT) on Saturday 5 December.
The guide price is £155,600 ($300,000 NZD) according to The Spaces, and interested buyers should contact futurochchnz@gmail.com.
