Bath ranked among the healthiest places in England
Bath and North East Somerset is the 13th healthiest place to live in England, according to the first official national health index.
The new data has been published in a new index that aims to measure the total health of the nation rather than just illness.
The index is split into three main sections looking at data from 149 local authorities in England.
The first is ‘healthy people’ which looks at life expectancy, health conditions and personal well-being.
BANES came 50th in this area.
The second is ‘healthy lives’ which takes lifestyle and behaviour into the account.
BANES came sixth in this area.
The third is ‘healthy places’ which includes wider determinants of health and environmental factors.
BANES came 70th in this area.
These sections are then broken down further into specific areas such as housing affordability, cancer and happiness.
Bath and North East Somerset came top in the physical activity category with a score of 134.3, more than six points higher than second place.
Overall Bath and North East Somerset was the 13th healthiest local authority area out of the 149 in England.
Other areas with notable scores include infant mortality (2nd place with 129.7), job related training (5th place with 121.2), healthy eating (8th place with 112.4) and diabetes (11th with 114.8).
The areas where BANES scored the lowest were musculoskeletal conditions (129th with 69.6), public green space (114th with 94.8), homelessness (114th with 90.4) and suicides (107th with 95.4).
Wokingham was named the healthiest place to live in the country, with Blackpool the unhealthiest.
